Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

An Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) is a certified professional trained to help individuals and families improve their financial well-being. AFCs provide education and guidance on budgeting, debt management, credit improvement, homeownership readiness, and overall financial stability. Unlike financial advisors who focus on investments, AFCs focus on practical financial education and behavioral change.

Financial counseling focuses on day-to-day money management — budgeting, debt reduction, credit improvement, and financial organization. Financial advising typically deals with investments and wealth management. As an AFC® and WMCP®, my role is to help you gain control of your finances and build the foundation needed to make confident long-term financial decisions.

No. I provide education, tools, and guidance to help you make informed financial decisions. You remain in control of your money — my role is to empower you to manage it confidently. I do not manage investments, sell financial products, or earn commissions of any kind.

Your progress depends on your commitment and financial situation, but clients typically work toward better budgeting and spending habits, improved credit scores, reduced debt and stronger savings, a clear plan for mortgage readiness, and increased financial confidence.

It depends on your goals. Some clients work with me for a few months to prepare for a mortgage, while others engage in ongoing support to develop long-term financial habits. I offer both structured engagements and flexible pay-as-you-go sessions depending on what fits your situation best.

Yes — this is one of my core services. If you’ve been denied a mortgage, I’ll help you identify exactly what needs to change, build a clear plan to address it, and position you for a stronger application. Most clients improve their readiness position within 60–90 days.

Not at all. Whether you’re struggling with debt, preparing to buy a home, navigating a business financial challenge, or simply want better financial habits and a clearer picture, I work with clients across all financial situations and income levels.

Yes. As an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), I provide tax strategy and advisory services for individuals, households, and business owners. This includes reviewing prior returns, identifying missed opportunities, and building forward-looking strategies to reduce tax liability. Note that tax preparation services are handled separately and are not included in advisory sessions. Tax strategy sessions are available at honorpointfinancial.com/book.

Yes. I work with sole proprietors, LLCs, S-Corps, and small business owners on cash flow and budgeting, business tax strategy, separating personal and business finances, and retirement planning for business owners including SEP-IRAs and Solo 401(k)s. If you’re not sure where to start, a free Small Business Initial Consultation is available at honorpointfinancial.com/book.

Yes. HonorPoint Financial is veteran-owned and operated. I served in the U.S. Army and bring that background to how I work with clients — straightforward, mission-focused, and committed to results. I have particular experience working with active duty military, veterans, and military families navigating the unique financial challenges that come with service.

I hold three professional designations: AFC® (Accredited Financial Counselor), EA (IRS Enrolled Agent), and WMCP® (Wealth Management Certified Professional). I have also completed all CFP® coursework. These credentials span financial counseling, tax representation, and wealth management — allowing me to provide guidance across a broad range of financial situations.

Yes. All sessions are available via Zoom or Google Meet, so I work with clients throughout Alaska and beyond. That said, I have deep familiarity with Alaska-specific financial considerations including the Permanent Fund Dividend, the Alaska SALT cap situation, and the Mat-Su Valley housing market.
